During the June 2021 pandemic, Canada recorded the highest number of new permanent immigrants, according to the office of Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino .

“We will fulfill our commitment to attract 401,000 new permanent residents,” said the minister in a recent article in The Globe and Mail .

The Canadian government plans to start doing this every year starting this year, according to its plan for immigration numbers 2021–2023 . At least 401,000 new immigrants have come to the United States. Before the pandemic, a target of 341,000 new immigrants had been set. This is the most ambitious plan in Canadian history.

Only once in the history of Canada have more than 400,000 immigrants been accepted in a single year. This was the case in 1913, but as a result of the outbreak of World War I, Canadian immigration declined almost immediately . According to the ministers’ office, more than 35,000 new permanent residents came to Canada in June . Canada’s Department of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) said in a subsequent email exchange with CIC News that preliminary data showed Canada took in 35,700 immigrants in the past month . That number is much higher than the sum total of recent months in Canada.

Canada got off to a good start this year. It accepted 24,680 new immigrants in January, but the pace slowed in the months that followed. In February the country welcomed 23,395 visitors, in March 22,425, in April 21,155, and in May 17,100. In total, around 143,000 new permanent residents were admitted to Canada in the first six months of 2021, which is still well below the rate required to admit 401,000 new immigrants by the end of the year . Canada needs another 258,000 new immigrants for the remainder of the year; H. 43,000 per month.

It will be difficult to take in that many immigrants in the next six months, but there is still a long way to go. Before the epidemic, Canada accepted an average of 25,000 to 35,000 new immigrants per month. More new immigrants arrive in the summer months when the weather is nicer, and before the academic and business calendar starts in September .

The second half of 2019 had the highest level compared to the first half of the year. Canada received 180,000 new immigrants between July and December. If Canada maintains this level of immigration through the second half of 2021, it would add more than 320,000 permanent residents by the end of the year, but that is not yet the goal . Canada is one step closer to achieving its new immigration destinations.

Approximately 23,000 additional Confirmed Permanent Residency (COPR) holders are now allowed to immigrate to Canada after restrictions were lifted on June 21 . Due to its flexible policy, the IRCC has created six new permanent residency avenues that allow around 90,000 adult international students and ordinary employees to stay in Canada .

The agency hopes to have processed around 40,000 of these applications by the end of the year. Long-term residents from all over the country provide the third tailwind. During the year, the IRCC set a number of fast-track records, favoring applicants with Canadian Experience (CEC) . The award scale is higher than ever and the pass mark is lower than ever. According to the IRCC, over 90% of CEC applicants are currently residents in Canada, making it easier for the agency to convert them to permanent residence during the epidemic than international applicants . This year, the IRCC issued nearly 100,000 express entry invitations, roughly twice as many as in 2020. During the epidemic, large numbers of guests will need to obtain their permanent residency by the end of 2021 .

According to Globe, the IRCC processed 45,100 permanent residence applications in June, more than ever before, demonstrating that the agency is able to process and complete the number of applications required to meet its objectives . plan. The global coronavirus situation is still on the move, with variables such as increases in patient numbers and travel restrictions being potential barriers . Canada, for example, continues to impose restrictions on flights from India, the largest newcomer country . Widening this restriction could make it more difficult for the IRCC to achieve its goals. Another danger is that the entry of COPR holders will be delayed .

Thousands of expired COPR holders are currently being contacted by the IRCC to arrange their arrival in Canada . As the IRCC must personally contact each COPR holder to ensure they have all of the documentation required for the immigration process, this is a time-consuming process . However , the immigration rate is expected to remain high over the next few months. With more foreign immigrants and Canadian applications coming in, the total number of monthly immigrants is likely to hit a new high by the end of the year .
